Rowan’s Ramblings – Hype Train

Full Steam Ahead!

Ho boy! With Week 1 of pre-season games complete the Fantasy Football hype train is full go. Whether it’s Trey Lance and his 80-yd TD to Trent Sherfield (not Sherfield’s first pre-season long TD mind you), Quez Watkins stepping up to the plate in Devonta Smith’s absence, or Rhamondre Stevenson’s 91-yd rushing TD, it’s easy to get sucked in. But don’t hear this like a cynical old man telling you what to do. Because let’s face it, the hype train is fun to be a part of!

Every year there’s pre-season darlings. Players that shoot up the ADP because of some big plays, coach speak, QB speak, Twitter speak, etc. And hey, I’m guilty too! Royce Freeman anyone? Sam Darnold looked good back in 2019. Curtis Samuel got hyped a year too early and I bought in. James Washington looked great too. Oh, and then there was Ameer Abdullah. It can be a minefield to get through!

But the preseason can still unveil some corkers as well. Rookies can prove themselves. Deebo Samuel showed that he was rising above Dante Pettis. Mike Williams was solid in 2018 before his 10 TD season. So, the question that remains is how do we sort it all out? And too often the answer is… ignore it. Trust the process of what’s gone before. For redraft especially, many players will be available on waivers after Week 1, so you can pounce then. But understanding the potential outcomes of these players is important. Can you see Rhamondre Stevenson getting work amid James White and Damien Harris? When will Trey Lance start for the 49ers, and what will his production be like? Can Quez Watkins be more than big splash plays, and provide a decent target total? Whatever you think the answers are to those questions will dictate how quickly you jump on these players when they show a glimpse in the real season.

Riding, Waiting, or Getting Off?

It might be a short Rambling this week, but I’m going to go Twitter-style and simply say whether I’m riding the hype train, still waiting at the station, or getting off for one player from every team. And these players are all that have had positive mentions these last few weeks. Will I give a reason or context? Nope, read into it what you will. Come and talk to me on Twitter about it, I promise I’ll respond!
